Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Glendy Vanderah was a cover buy for me, its ascetics is absolutely enthralling.
However, after a few chapters I was completely immersed in the story and the novel became just as enthralling as the cover. The main storyline revolves around Jo, a young “alien” girl called Ursa and a neighbour, Gabe. Jo, a graduate researching nesting birds has had a bumpy road, having lost her mum to cancer and undergoing treatment herself. Ursa, a young girl who turns up on Jo’s rental property in pyjamas and bare feet, looking for somewhere to stay, and Gabe an intelligent man, who has social anxiety and bouts of depression, who desperately needs some closure to his past.
I know this looks like a lot of heavy topics, and they are. However, the story does all of these issues justice and it doesn’t feel like a heavy read at all. The characters are completely believable, having issues that a lot of people live with in their daily lives, which actually made this book for me, having lived through some of these things myself.
I think Glendy Vanderah has achieved to produce an amazing debut. To be perfectly honest I am completely in awe that this is a debut. It is well written, and flows perfectly. I have to say, I am so glad the cover grabbed my attention.
The story is about growing love, attachments, hope and survival. What a combination!! It is also a reminder that even though life sometimes throws curveballs and all sorts of rubbish your way, there is also always light, love and survival if you just give it a chance.
This books gets 5 stars from me, it actually got me out of a book slump. I look forward to reading more from Glendy in the future.
